A longtime Minnesota professional, Sidney “Sid” Elyea serves as project manager at Copeland Building Corporation, and pursues a variety of commercial development projects. A nature enthusiast, Sidney Elyea enjoys hiking and fishing in his free time, as well as taking outdoor photographs. A key to successful composition in outdoor settings, which can contain many competing elements, involves paring down what is framed to the essentials. Taking in the scene through the viewfinder, identify the central element of the scene, whether it is a tree, boulder, lake, or mountain, and eliminate elements that distract. Be aware that dynamic contrasts between lightness and dark in the setting can do much of the work for you. What might seem a distracting sign in front of a viewpoint can become an interesting foreground element if it is in shadows and the backdrop is in light. Elements such as light shining through branches or just over a ridge can also be used to bring attention to specific areas of the foreground. Just make sure that elements are arranged so that they lead the gaze to a series of points in composition, telling a story.
